Ok. This is coming from the guy who says we don’t need to wear masks. I guess we all need to shelter in place until after the election because everything is pointing to run the clock out and hope Trump doesn’t get re-elected.
Dr. Anthony Fauci is scheduled to issue a warning to the Senate today on the “needless suffering and death” the U.S. faces if it opens too quickly, The New York Times reports.
Fauci, who is the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, is one of four top government doctors slated to testify remotely during a hearing before the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee.
In a Monday night email to New York Times reporter Sheryl Gay Stolberg, he revealed his message to senators.
“The major message that I wish to convey to the Senate HLP committee tomorrow is the danger of trying to open the country prematurely,” Facui wrote. “If we skip over the checkpoints in the guidelines to: ‘Open America Again,’ then we risk the danger of multiple outbreaks throughout the country. This will not only result in needless suffering and death, but would actually set us back on our quest to return to normal.”
Opening Up America Again is the three-prong plan the White House suggested state officials follow when reopening. Recommendations include documenting less cases over a two week period, testing vulnerable populations and implementing contact tracing.
This will be Fauci’s first time appearing before Congress since President Donald Trump declared a national emergency in March. It will be the first time Fauci speaks without Trump next to him.
Director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Robert Redfield, Food and Drug Administration Commissioner Dr. Stephen Hahn and the Assistant Secretary for Health at the Department of Health and Human Services Adm. Brett Giroir are also testifying at Tuesday’s hearing, according to CNN.
